Since 1958, the centenary of the former Royal Dutch Hospital for Eye Patients, the Snellen Medal has been awarded every five years to a Dutch person who has made a special contribution to ophthalmology, or another branch of science that is closely related to ophthalmology.

On the 10th of November 2023 Prof dr. Arthur Bergen will receive this prestigious Snellenpenning, considered to be a lifetime achievement award.
